Entoloma hochstetteri
Sky-blue mushroom

Yesterday I had a good day hunting fungi on the plateau above the Arnold River hydro-power station.
There were lots of these blue Entoloma around,so I had plenty of subjects to choose from.
I particularly liked these two,which were considerably larger than any I'd seen before.
I hope you like them too.

Here is some more information about the species ....

Species: Entoloma hochstetteri

Description: Pileus 15-50 mm diam., conical to sharply umbonate, edge inturned (even in aged carpophores), light blue turning greenish blue and finally ochraceous coloured near the apex, hygrophanous, striate towards the margin, dry, appressed fibrillose. Lamellae adnexed or subfree, bluish when young, becoming bluish-reddish brown to pink brown, moderately crowded, gill edge concolorous, even or irregularly scalloped. Stipe 50-100(-150) x 3-5 mm, cylindrical, equal or attenuated upwards, concolorous with pileus, fading to brownish, whitish at the base, dry, fistulose, fragile, fibrillose, frequently twisted. Context bluish or bluish-greenish (especially at the base). Odor and taste indistinct. Chem. reactions: on pileus: KOH - light reddish-brown; HCl yellowish; NH3- negative.
Spore print purplish or deep red-brown. Spores 11-15 x 11-14 µm, cuboid. basidia 40-60 x 15-20 µm, 4-spored. Cheilocystidia 40-60 x 8-14 µm, fusoid, with long tapering and apically rounded neck, membrane thin-walled. pleurocystidia none. Cuticle a cutis composed of repent or slightly suberect, cylindrical hyphae (5-13 µm diam.), terminal cells rounded, membrane thinwalled, with indistinct plasmatic pigment.
Clamp connections present.
Habitat: Among litter and moss on soil particularly in broad-leaved forests and Podocarpus-forests, rarely occurring in Nothofagus-bush. New Zealand.
Notes: This fungus is common in the lowland-forests of New Zealand, especially on the western side of the three islands.

I realy love those blue moshrooms, Steve, the colour is so unreal - remembers me a little to an old fairy-tail-book I had when I were a child. There were also many colourful funghis inside ;-)

I can't stop admiring this mushroom and its blue colour. Excellent portrait of it, sharp with fine lighting and composition. I especially like the ligting on the stems.

Wonderful and eye-catching specie as always, good photo of You as always. :) Sometimes our Entoloma nitidum has almost such blue in the cap, but not so strong as this specie does. Simple yet great, and the lights make the pic quite artistic. Bravo, MF.

If colours of fungi were a main quality of photo..then you would win hands down. Your gallery of unusual 'Shrooms is remarkable...and in more than one way. I have seen video of you doing unusual moves in the ocean in craft and board and I have seen images of mushrooms..and I have heard stories that would make a kid pray that he grows up right...and in between all of this...you somehow end up a remarkable man of all learning and fields...kid of what we call "street smart" but one has to convert that to New Zealand now..as you did when you moved...

Hi Steve,

I have never seen a blue mushroom!! The color is lovely and looks wonderful against the dark green leaves. Nice details of these strange looking fungi. I only saw two plain looking ones when I was in NZ - but I was in all the wrong places.

Wow, I see blue fungi, again! I must change my pills :-) Another unique picture and subject, Steve! Most of all I like shadows and lightplay here - spots of bright light mixed with dark areas. Good hunt!
