Here is a closer look at the huge stick insect I found yesterday in the beech forest near Stillwater.
The temperature is into the minuses at night now, so its amazing that there are still any around.
Stick insects are very much a tropical creature, although one New Zealand species has become established in Great Britain.

When I lived on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, there was a big old abandoned villa on the village green.
My friends and I used to fill the wire netting food cupboards with various species of stick insects and mantids. There were some very big ones there.

Here is the scientific stuff:

Large Spiny Stick Insect
Argosarchus horridus
Synonym: Argosarchus spiniger (White, 1846)

Scientific classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Phasmatodea
Suborder: Verophasmatodea
Family: Phasmatidae
Genus: Argosarchus
Hutton, 1898
Species: A. horridus
Binomial name
Argosarchus horridus
(White, 1846)

Hope you like the shot.
Thanks for viewing and your comments.
Cheers
Steve

Hello Steve,
Nice close-up of my favourite Stick insect, the macro potential of your new SX10 IS beginning to show here, the sharpness and colours being first class. Once again I find the fron leg posture fascinating.
Thanks and cheers,
Ivan
