[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today (well,yesterday now) I met up with Nikki (greychick) at the Cobden lagoon and,while we were talking abouth the Royal Spoonbill,this one came and landed right in front of us.
So,I got my very first shots of this regal bird,foraging for food in the lagoon.
This shot isn't perhaps the sharpest of the batch but I liked it anyway,so here it is.

Royal Spoonbills (Platalea regia) are large heron like birds,with slightly curved,spatulate bills which they sweep from side to side,moving forward as they feed.
Immatures have brown on their primaries.
Spoonbills have a strong,gliding,soaring flight with head extended unlike herons.
They frequent tidal creeks and lay 3-4 white eggs blotched with brown.

NZ still surprises me - from caves to coasts, from ferns to spoonbills ;-) This bird is definitelly exotic in my part of the world. Great catch!

In Holland it's better and better with this bird. A few years ago we can find him only in a very small part of North Neteherland. But now you can find him in a great part of Holland. Scientists say that this is because it is warmer (global warming) They get more little thinks to eat, like shrimps and small fishes. And a very important story, the winters are the last years not so cold.

So your first Royal Spoonbill is a very nice one. You can see him at work in very clear water. Interesting notes.

What a great afternoon it was Steve. I was thinking about heading home when I got there and he wasnt there, but then you turned up and we got yacking and he turned up. I'm thinking with the whitebait season upon us, we might see more of him there. I will have to post one of mine today lol.

Great shot, I like where the rock is positioned for some reason, and the reflection is nice. Can't wait to see how some of your others turned out. Great shot.

That spoonbill sure has a strange looking beak. Good shot Steve, and the reflections look good too. And so does the surroundings in the lagoon.

congrats on your first capture of this great looking bird! That bill must weigh a lot to carry around. Very nice POV and good job on the exposure too, i think Evelynns workshop is good too.
