Red-billed gulls
Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus
Maori – Tarapunga (Ta-rar-pung-ah)

These native New Zealand Red-billed gulls would win the 1st prize in the top squabbler competition.

Gulls live in flocks, so they have to get along with each other. It’s a bit like children at school. Gulls squabble but they don’t really hurt each other, and they warn each other about danger but you often see them letting others know ‘who’s the boss!’

Gulls can most often be seen at the beach, where they eat small marine creatures (hoppers, crabs and shellfish), but they also spend time at the dump – because they are good at scavenging food scraps that people throw away.

Grown up red-billed gulls have red beaks and red legs.

This is a young immature red-billed gull - they have dark brown to brownish-red bills, purplish brown legs and feet, and attractive brown spots on their back and wing spots.

Sorry for my lack of action here on TN lately. But we have had a new grandchild born this week, and we’re minding Master 2 ½ year old – he is keeping us very busy as he is a little fellow who’s on the go all the time. And his favourite word is, “WHY?” I’ll try and visit you all soon.

Hey Janice, a nice shot of the Red Billed Gull. I very much like the pose and POV. Your have caught the tonces and light in the feathers very well indeed. I like the delecate face. We have similar gulls here and they do a lot of screeching and squabbling! Lovly shot.

Hello Janice,
gGreat cpture of a juvenile Red-billed Gull. I can see the delinquency on his facial expression, strutting around and looking for trouble!
This is sharp and presented in a pleasing composition against the sand.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan
