| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Hooker’s sea lions, also known as New Zealand sea lions, are one of only 5 species of sea lions in the world, the others being the Australian sea lion, the South American sea lion, the California sea lion and Steller sea lion.
Hooker’s sea lions are one of the most regionally localised and rare of the world’s seal species. They breed almost exclusively at the Auckland Islands in the New Zealand subantarctic region. A few sea lions also breed on New Zealand’s Campbell Island.
The total population is estimated to be only about 12,500 animals. Historically, this species’ range also included most of the New Zealand coast, but a combination of subsistence hunting by Maori and commercial sealing by Europeans reduced the range and numbers to the present extent. The population appears to have been stable for about the past 5 decades.

Hi Christian, this is a fab shot of the 2 Sea Lions with an intersting note. I love shots of animals interacting with each other. A great POV with good light and nice and sharp. Good exposure.
