This was shot at Kaikoura on the last and probably the best day of my entire vacation in NZ. This day rocked: Whales, Seals, Dolphins!

New Zealand Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) ->

The species is found at many locations around New Zealand's rocky coastline, mostly on the southern shores of the country's South Island and on many of the offshore and subantarctic islands. Population estimates for the species in New Zealand are not complete, but it is thought that the total population, which seems to be increasing, exceeds 50,000 adults. The Bounty Islands, southeast of the main islands, are home to the largest fur seal concentration recorded in New Zealand, with an estimated 21,500 seals in 1994. Other important rookeries are found in the Open Bay Islands, Cape Foulwind, Cascade Point, Wekakura Point, the Otago Peninsula, the Nelson-northern Marlborough region, Fjordland and the islands of the Foveaux Strait. Three small rookeries have also been established on the North Island in recent years.

New Zealand fur seals were hunted by Polynesians and later by Europeans for almost 1,000 years. During the 18th and 19th centuries they were nearly hunted to extinction by the fur trade but are now protected under New Zealand's Marine Mammals Protection Act and are beginning to re-colonise areas in their pre-exploitation range.

I will be away on a little Easter holiday until Monday! I will visit Germany and hopefully I return with some nice TN-worthy pictures. I don't have a long lens yet, so don't expect too much! In the mean time; I hope you won't miss me too much and feel free to criticize this picture. Be tough if you think that's necessary. I can really handle it! :)

Good pose Pieter of this smelly seal. They blend into the rocks so well. We had a close encounter with a male one of these in Dunedin - a bit scary at the time, but funny to look back on. TFS.

Pieter, very nice shot of this fur seal. It is hard to take a bad picture of a pinniped, they just always seem to pose so well, as this one did. Godd sharp detail. Nice Work!

Very cute Pieter. So this is what I can expect to see in August. It is a long time since I was in Kaikoura. We are heading down that way for 2 weeks so hopefully it won't be too cold to see these cuties. Nice work with lots of attitude! Well done. TFS

A very nice capture.
Lovely pose, nice detail and a great note.
Very well done.

Very good title, Pieter! The pose really asks for it. Sunlight seems very high, but you've handled it very well. Water in the BG makes a nice color patch in the overall grey. Details on the subject and head position are very good.

Nice pose. Pity the seal blends in a bit too much with the rocks. Just kidding.
