HAEMANTHUS COCCINEUS

This plant always surprises us late summer. It just seems to pop up from nowhere, but then we realise that 6-9 months earlier, there were 2 ugly tongue-like leaves growing in the same place that seemed to grow and grow, and then rot away and disappear.

The leaves are smooth and fleshy, and semi-erect. They die down from about October in the Southern Hemisphere and the bulb lies dormant during summer.

Now it is late summer and once again the flowers have appeared again.

This is the BLOOD LILY, APRIL FOOL or MARCH LILY, HAEMANTHUS COCCINEUS, with flowerheads like bright shaving brushes popping up from underground bulbs. They emerge between February and April, usually before the leaves appear. The stem is occasionally unmarked, but is most often more-or-less streaked or spotted. The flowerhead comprises 6-9 stiff, red spathe valves surrounding the 25-100 coral to scarlet flowers. The valves are mostly fleshy and may stand erect or sometimes be somewhat lax.

The flowers are soon followed by translucent, fleshy berries containing 1-3 dark wine-coloured seeds. The berries may be white to pale or deep pink in colour.

I plan to follow its cycle this year and keep you up-to-date on its progress.
