White-faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae)

The White-Faced Heron is a large graceful bird instantly recognisable by its’ long slender neck, long straight beak and long yellow legs. Mostly grey in colour there is a white face in adult birds and yellow legs. It is distinct from other herons by being grey instead of browns or black and white patterns seen in other herons. Juveniles can look brownish, particularly in flight, but look for the long yellow legs. Herons can also be mistaken for egrets, which are usually white, but the Eastern Reef Egret (Egretta sacra) does have a grey variety in southern Australia. Look for the white face of the White-Faced Heron to distinguish it from the grey type of the Eastern Reef Egret.

Usually found near water, the White-Faced Heron can often be seen fishing in the shallows. It seems to fly in slow motion with long sweeps of the wings.
