[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I told you all about the Tree Weta,Hemideina thoracica,in yesterdays post. Here you can get an idea of how scary they look when alarmed. They can get worse,as my next shot will show.
Usualy,a display like this, combined with a sharp rasping sound,is enough to make anyone think twice about picking them up.
Surprisingly enough,if you are gentle, they will walk up onto your hand without too much fuss. They very rarely bite unless squeeezed or otherwise mishandled.
Some species of Weta are amongst those amazing creatures that can freeze solid over winter, then thaw out again in summer and carry on as if nothing had happened.
Hope you like this one.
Thanks for Looking.

Nice action shot. Very good composition and sharpness. Weta is very interesting insect.

Halo Steve!
Great shining body :-)!

Freaky critter, bro, straight out of space (or gulags...) sweet, cant wait to see how uglier they get. Hasta manana, amigo !

Hi Steve, the making of nightmares!
Very well shown, I know this stance. They do make a clicking noise at the same time as they raise their legs, and I definitely wouldn't want to pick one up. Ugh!
TFS...

Hi Steve!
Scary and ugly. For ladies of course :-) Looks like visitor from space indeed. Nice shinning chitine body. Question - did you found one of this kind on your bed while went to sleep?

Belle et intéressante photo pour cet étonnant insecte, par sa forme, sa position et son endurance... Jolies couleurs et bonne netteté.
Well Done !

Steve, Very unique pose this..Can't say that I've seen it before..Looks dis-jointed. Well composed with good details and color. Thanx for sharing this weirdo! ;-))

Very good macro Steve.
Strange critter, never seen or heard of this before.
Good composition and colours.
Well done.

I love this one Steve. Amazing these Weta's. This is really a scary POV even for someone like me who does not easily scare from bugs. :) Very interesting post, well done.

Incredible ugly beast. Doesn't contrast that well with the log. Good details though.
Toni

Crazy looking criter, their defense must work well. I think the POV could have been improved if the shot was taken lower down and fill flash had been used to add some detail to the face. The bright background distracts from the impressive subject.
