Dead Tree-Fern Trunk

This is the dead trunk of one of New Zealand’s many tree ferns. I found a couple of these old dead trunks on the cliff walkway close to the beach here at Murrays Bay. The trunks are very tall, at a guess about 10 - 12 feet tall. All the fronds have fallen off and this interesting looking trunk is all that remains.

You can see the marks from the old fronds and there is lichen growing on the trunk also. I love the black/grey colour and the patterns are so interesting. I hope you think that as well.

I don’t know what fern tree they came from but they could be from one of the following:

Whekī- Rough Tree Fern is the most common throughout NZ. Grows up to 7m to 1000m above sea level. Slender black trunk with peg like remains of fallen fronds. Scratchy to touch and no skirt.

Whekī-Ponga has very thick brown trunk & a heavy skirt of dead fronds. Harsh to touch. Grows up to 6m. Found NZ wide to 1000m.

Dicksonia Fibrosa is a slow growing, very hardy tree fern which will reach up to 6m in height (although over many decades!). They have very thick, fibrous trunks and produces a beautiful crown of fronds in shuttlecock shapes. The fronds feel very crisp to touch, grow 1 – 2m in length and create a very symmetrical appearance. Old fronds can form a “skirt” around the trunk which protects the crown.

Mamaku- Black Tree Fern is the tallest of our tree ferns-up to 20m. Frond stalks are black & very thick and dead fronds fall off. Found NZ wide to 1000m above sea level. Likes damp forest gullies.

Tree is dead Janice, but it is now home for many lichens and probably insects, too. I like colours - silver and black with contrast to blue sky on BG. Excellent quality!
We were yesterday on long walk and took many shots of lichens and mosses.

Halo Janice!
Great texture. I love this shot.

Wonderful full textures to the bark I am often surprised at how long they last even when lying down on a damp forest floor. You didn't happen to over sharpen the image?

Very, very sharp details Janice! This is really good. The colors are also very nice and saturated. Well composed (diagonal line) and informative note. Well done! :) TFS!

Very interesting shot Janice!
I love the contrast between the green-blue BG and the main subject with it's dark and sad colours.
Well done!

Well the fern may be dead but the Lichens are alive and well. The exposure and composition here is excellent.

Well done Janice.
