[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Here is the 2nd photo in my series of photos taken at Southwell School where I work. This is an old Titoki tree, which is a native to New Zealand. These trees are often found in coastal and low land forests thoughout the North Island and some parts of the South Island. It is most abundant on alluvial soils. This tree flowers in spring, the flowers are very small and purplish. The capsules are furry and distinctive in shape. They are a little flattened with a flange like the crest of a classical helmet. When ripe the capsule splits, revealing a large shiny black seed, partly enclosed by a convoluted bright red aril.
A great tree for shade on a hot hamilton day

What a great old Titoki Gareth. They can grow up to 10 metres, and this looks monstrous. What a trunk, looks like it had a few kids climbing it over the years. Well shown and TFS.

Nice post Gareth I looked up this tree (Alectryon excelsus) in one of my books to find more about it. maybe next time I come across it I will recognize it..... pigs night fly to :) wonderful gnarly old tree.
