[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Here is another shot taken while at Deer Park Heights near Queenstown on the South Island. This beastie was somewhat smaller and less intimidating than the Bison Bull I posted previously, but just about equally magnificant, I think.

I had some difficulty with the exposure here, with the contrast between his dark coat of hair and the strong afternoon sun, and did what I could with some PP work. Due to the haze in the sky, the mountains really DID appear this blue (not a result of my PP).

Wild yaks are much larger than their domesticated counterparts, sometimes as tall as 6 feet at the shoulder. These wild herds will follow one leader in a single file line, stepping in the tracks left by the leader.

There are probably fewer than 400 wild yaks in Tibet and Nepal today. The wild yak (Bos grunniens mutus) is listed as an endangered species. Major threats to wild yaks are hybridization and competition with domestic stock, poaching and habitat disturbance.

Their respiratory systems are well adapted for living in high altitudes. They have a slower rate of respiration and more red blood cells to absorb oxygen in thin air.

Tibetan yaks are native to the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal and Tibet . They were domesticated in Tibet nearly 5,000 years ago. They can survive in rocky, alpine terrain with meadows for grazing. They are highly adaptable to a variety of habitats.

I have been to Queenstown many times but have never been to this Deer Park. I must make a note next time we are there to go visit. He is a great looking beast. Would want to get in his way. Hi Jennifer. Lovely shot with beautiful background to go with it. I appreciate the difficulty caused by the exposure. Maybe a little fill-in flash would help? I say that tentatively cos I'm struggling to learn how to use flash properly myself! The BG, spot-on DOF, highlight in the yak's eye and wonderful composition make this shot really stand out.
