Cyperus papyrus

These are the leaves of the papyrus or paper plant, that are arranged in umbels, or tufts, on the end of tall, stems. This Papyrus is growing around Lake Pupuke, an extinct volcanic basin, in Milford, Auckland.

Cyperus papyrus is an aquatic plant that has woody, bluntly triangular stems and grows up to about 15 feet in quietly flowing water up to three feet deep and the stem can grow up to six centimetres in width near the top.

Cyperus papyrus, commonly called papyrus or paper plant, is a member of the sedge family (Cyperaceae). It is native to riverbanks and other wet soil areas in Egypt, Ethiopia, the Jordan River Valley, and other parts of the Mediterranean basin.

Sedge is a common name for members of the Cyperaceae, a family of monocots composed of 115 genera and 3,600 species found in tropical and warm regions. Sedges are grasslike plants that differ from true grasses by having solid, triangular stems. Most sedges are perennial and reproduce by rhizomes.

Historically papyrus has been very important in the making paper that was used for many reasons; from books to government documents. Papyrus was the most widely used writing material in ancient Egypt. It was also adopted by the Greeks and extensively used by the Roman Empire. Papyrus has also been used to make sandals, boxes, ropes, mats, cloth, and building materials. The reeds were also bundled to make boats. And nowadays, the rhizomes of the plant are used to prevent soil erosion and trap polluted sediments

A good picture Janice. Very sharp details. To me it's almost hypnotizing to look at it, because of the strip-pattern. Very interesting note also. TFS!

Fantastic POV and composition Janice! For first sight looks like underwater picture with some kind of sea-urchin. Great sky, sunny, colorfull and geometric. Extraordinary.

Excellent graphical composition!
Framing, lighting and DOF you maneged are wonderful!

This has a fireworks-type effect, with the different colors and the way the the center is in focus and the edges softened. Artsy! -Jenn

Nice composition, I like the colours. Good framing and POV.
Well done.
TFS.
