Royal Spoonbill collecting nesting material along the river bank. This was just down below the White Herons nesting area.
Cropped for closer view to a verticle. ISO 400, F/8, 1/500, -2/3 exp comp, 300mm + 1.4x converter.

wikipedia
The male gathers nesting material, mostly sticks and reeds, sometimes taken from an old nest, the female weaves it into a large, shallow bowl or platform which varies in its shape and structural integrity according to species. The Okarito spoonbills build their nests in the exposed canopy of the tallest kahikatea trees and regularly lose all their eggs or chicks in storms.
They usually lay three off-white eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the hatchlings. The chick has a black face, and the bill has not yet developed its characteristic shape. Chicks fledge when seven weeks old, but are fed by their parents for a few more weeks.
The primary cause of brood failure appears not to be predation but starvation.

What an extraordinary creature!
You were lucky to get such a good shot of it.
I can see you had to enlarge the zoomed image a bit ... there's just a wee bit of noise in places (under the breast etc) but with ISO 400 you'd expect that anyway I guess.
An excellent shot in any case.
Well done!
Steve

Hello Kathleen,
We saw these birds along the waterfront in Cairns, Queensland. Seeing them on the ground is one thing but seeing them up in the trees must be fantastic. It must be a pretty strong tree to take the weight of both the White Herons and the Spoonbills. I like the pose of this one gathering nest material and I expect you'll show us more of this one?!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Wish we had these birds over here, I think they're gorgeous.
Beautiful capture...

Hi Kathleen, a wonderful pov on this Spoonbill, pov and pose shows character. I always wonder how heavy those bills are to carry around. Very good exposure on the whites and nice and sharp.

Hi Kathleen

Back from California - just a shortish break.

Great POV with great detail and exposure - always difficult in these conditions.

James

Hello Kathleen,
He looks like my dog when he's retrieving sticks from the water, hehehe!
A fine birdy portrait, the shining white plumage is very well exposed and comes out with good texture...
A fine composition, good colour palette!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Kathleen. Well taken and presented. The white feathers can be a problem at times but you have handled that well. Good ornithological photo. TFS. Murray.
