Red Damselfly / Kihitara (Maori)
Xanthocnemis zealandica
Family:Coenagrionidae

There are six known species of Damselfly in New Zealand.
This is one of the smaller ones.
Found from brackish coastal water to high apline tarns, usually near plants along the edges of ponds, lakes and rivers, flying close to the ground from November to March.
The male is red with black markings, the female sometimes more orange brown.
During drought the nymphs can survive for several months by burying themselves in damp mud.

I found this one hovering amongst the grasses and weeds along the stream at the bottom of our garden.
This was fairly small,no bigger than 4cm.
It was tricky to shoot leaning over the stream, and the bright reflective leaf made it awkward to get a good clear shot of the body details.
Still, its the only Red Damsel I've captured so far,so it will have to do until I get a better one.

Hello Steve,
you highly magnified this damselfly for us so that we can enjoy the sharp details such as the thorny legs and wing venation.
Exact focus on the insect.
Best wishes, Peter

I see it has it's wings folded ready for storage!!! nice shot....gives a different view of the creature apart from the usual open wing shots....

Namastay Steve,
A very rare to see shot from you. It is very well composed with good details and a nice POV. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Sincerely
Hara

Hi Steve,
a superb capture of this Red Damselfly.
+++ I like the diagonal composition though I think it would be better if you flip it horizontally.
Great sharpness and detail.
Nice colours and lighting.
--- Some OE on the leaf but I' only nit-picking!
Well done,
Joe

I like the details in the wings.
I'd love to see this guy with a looser crop with some more room to the left and above so he can move into the space.
Nice colours and saturation.
