This is just one of the native birds a round southwell school where i work .This little fantail(Rhipidura fuliginosa)i have nick named fluffy it seems to love flying around the kitchen windows getting small flys. Our dish washing sink looks out over the trees this bird love to play and feed in so at times its great to watch this bird and work at the same time. This would have been the hardest photo to take as fantails are always on the go.For me its one of the most attractive birds we have in new zealand and perhaps the best known after the kiwi.
The fantail has a small head and beek and a tail which opens to a fan giving the bird its name. It has a grey black head, white eyebrow and white and black band under the chin on the upper chest. The back is brown and the underparts are a peachy gold. The tail is black and white.
Fantails feed mainly on invertebrates taken whilst flying but have been seen feeding on the ground. Using their fanned tail they are very manoeuverable which helps them quickly change direction whilst flycatching. They are known to hop around upside down in amongst tree ferns and foliage looking to pick insects from the underside of leaves.
The main fantail contact call is a penetrating cheet cheet, sounding a bit like a squeaky toy .
they can come very close to you in the bush have been called the bushmans friend as will follow you for miles feeding along the way.

Not the esiest birds to photograph. I have tried so many times, but they just tease. Good work. Soft on focus, but I like it. Thanks

Yep...One of the hardest things to photograph I'd say.
You could probably get away with lowering the light, saturating and sharpening a little.
You can tell this is not in the bush...the rose is a dead giveaway :)

Very good Gareth I two have chased fantails around with a camera with no sucsses so you have done well.

What a cute ball of fluff Gareth. You did well to catch him because they are always on the go. This is briliiant. Well done. The notes are good too.

Yes very good picture, it must be hard to take such good pictures when you are working. You must have a very good boss! But love it your new camera is so much better and the information is tops too, thanks
