CORRECTION: I’ve changed the original notes.

I have just changed the notes here as Steve (Lord Potty) thinks that this NZ Native tree is actually Pseudopanax lessoni purpurea, and I thought it was Pseudopanax discolour which has a much smaller, thinner, less glossy and more finely cut leaf.

There are 11 endemic New Zealand species of Pseudopanax, so I will bow to Steve, who has a much better knowledge of plants than I do. But I do love the colours and shapes of the new life opening up. Just so incredibly stunning.

It is an especially attractive native NZ plant with chocolate new growth and shiny tri-foliate leaves. Note the glossy leaves that reduce salt damage – it is a coastal plant common in the top half of the North Island of NZ. The compound leaves are 3-5 parted, giving the leaves the look of a hand, and so the name: 5 finger.

Essential Oils are found from the Leaves of 3 of the eleven endemic New Zealand Species of Pseudopanax (Araliaceae): Pseudopanax. arboreus, P. discolor and P. lessonii. I noted the names of the oils, but I’m sure no-one is really interested in all these names, but if you are, here they some of them – viridiflorol, hydroazulene, bicyclogermacrene, linalool, hydrocarbons.

So now the Maori name could be wrong too! But I'll still teach you how to pronounce the word Rangatira. It should be said quickly– Rang-gi-te-ra

Hi Janice.
I've heard this called Pseudopanax discolour before,by nursery workers too,but I'm sure this is actually Pseudopanax lessoni purpurea.
Pseudopanax disolour has a much smaller,thinner,less glossy and more finely cut leaf.I learned the difference between the two on my horticulture course.
Not all the nurseries get it right though.Sometimes even their labels are wrong.
