This is a Spine fungus or fungus icicle.
Hericium corraloides are found growing underneath dead or rotting hardwood trees.It is thought that there is more than one species of this in New Zealand,and I have seen this illustrated under the name Hericium clathroides.
Whatever its name,it certainly it a most unusual and striking fungus.
I found this at the turning back point of a long day return hike.My battery was low and I didn't get a second chance. The whites refecting light reflected from the stream below were way overexposed and of the two or three awful shots I got,this was the least awful.
I figured it was still interesting enough to post on Tn,though.

Not bad at all! Subject is very interesting - I like its shapes, looks like coral indeed. Pink colour is also very nice. For 1/25 it is very good picture. Pity that you couldn't make any close-ups!

Fantastic fungus Steve, very interesting photo.

Great shot!
At the first sight it's hard to figure out what it is, but the whole photo looks very interesting because of that POV and composition.
I like it very much.

Interesting & well done !

This one does seem to be slightly different, longer spines and is in New Zealand. Quite alot of countries seem to have this one (well look a like)

Nice find on this full cluster of Bears Tooth! Much more mature from a similar post of yours. I wouldn't say "Awful" at all, just misfortunate as a bit more light would have brought out more detail of this already fine capture!
