A Tiny Piece of New Zealand’s Native Bush

This photo shows a very tiny part of the bush at Parry’s Park in Walkworth – beautiful, isn’t it????

Notice the many ftree erns you can see growing. Some of these will be Mamaku or Black Tree Fern (Cyathea medullaris) . It is the tallest and fastest growing New Zealand tree fern. It can grow to 20 meters tall. It has a black trunk with very large fronds 2-6 meters long. And you can also see NZ’s well known Silver fern, (Cyathea dealbata).

The silver fern
is becoming increasingly recognised overseas as the national symbol of New Zealand. The iconic silver fern, from the foetal koru to graceful frond, is a cornerstone of New Zealand culture — a symbol of national pride and as famous as the All Blacks, who wear the silver fern on their rugby shirts. The New Zealand Netball team is called The Silver Ferns. All our sporting teams wear the silver fern emblem when representing New Zealand.

In the background you can see some Rimu Trees (Dacrydium cupressinum). Rimu or also known as Red Pine, is a tree that usually grows to a height of between 20 and 35 meters but sometimes even 50 meters. The straight trunk is up to 1.5 meters through and the bark is dark brown with a flaking texture.

Rimu is one of the best known species in New Zealand and is an excellent timber tree. Heart Rimu is one of the most beautifully figured woods and is very often used in quality furniture.

Hi Janice.
Wonderful crisp sharp image of the luxuriant vegetation with a lot of colour shades , lights and shadows. Excellent POV and vertical composition, exposure is great too. My compliments and TFS.
Alexei.

Janice,
What an artistic shot! And as I keep saying, it's so real!!
Just a quick question though, the whiteness towards the centre is something which is very natural, I've had very similar 'whiteness', if I may, but this has been called over-exposure, which I do not find correct, but honestly, is that true?
Cheers!
Goldy

Hello Janice,
I like the play of light on the greens of the ferns in this NZ woodland capture. The vegetation looks interesting and inviting and it would be nice to see a mature Rimu tree.
This is an image that fires the imaginationand I thanks you for sharing it!
Have a good weekend,
Ivan

Precioso rincón, que parece trasladarnos a la época de los dinosaurios...je.
Buenos detalles y excelente comentario.
Un cordial saludo, JL.

Hi Janice,

I quite like to see pictures where someone has made a picture of seemingly random leaves and branches, partly because I can't do this. Lovely colours and patterns throughout the picture.

Mike

Hi Janice,
A very familiar sight to us Kiwis, and a lot harder to photograph well than people imagine, what with all those reflective green surfaces.
A beautiful scene.
Cheers
Steve
