Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Basidiomycota
Class: Basidiomycetes
Order: Agaricales
Family: Tricholomataceae
Genus: Mycena
Species: M. parsonsii

Mycena parsonsii (top fungus)
Pileus very variable in size from 5 mm up to 20mm in diam., broadly conic with a narrow to moderately broad umbo, or convex, mostly pinkish-fawn or paler, darker reddish-brown in centre, with very fine, reddish fibrils under a lens, dry, dull, striate-plicate to more than 1/2 of radius, margin crenulate, often with a deeper pink spot in the centre of each crenulation. Lamellae ascending, adnate with a decurrent tooth to sinuate, flesh pink, fairly broad and somewhat distant, in 2 series, margin Fimbriate, distinctly red or deep pink or concolorous with the lamellae. (The bright red of the lamellar edge in some fruiting bodies is due to the bright red sap in the cheilocystidia and neighbouring cells of the trama; in others the sap will be a pale yellow.) Stipe 5-50 X 1-2 mm, pinkish-fawn lo reddish-brown, darker brown towards the base and darkening on handling, even, shining, with very fine, pale squamules, more distinct hairs at the base and attached to the substratum; exuding deep red latex when broken. Flesh thin red.

Habitat: Gregarious and caespitose on dead wood of Kunzea ericoides, Leptospermum scoparium, Dacrycarpus dacrydioides, Metrosideros excelsa, in lowland podocarp Dicotyledonous forest, on introduced plants such as Quercus robur, and Cycas revoluta, in city gardens, and even in limestone caves.

Notes: This is one of the most frequently occurring species of Mycena, always in clusters on wood, commonly on Kunzea, Leptospermum, or Dacrycarpus in mixed podocarp-dicotyledonous forest.

Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Basidiomycota
Class: Basidiomycetes
Order: Tremellales
Family: Exidiaceae
Genus: Pseudohydnum
Species: P. gelatinosum

Pseudohydnum gelatinosum (bottem fungus)
Fructifications gelatinous, translucent, creamy white when fresh, becoming light brown with age, abhymenial surface drying dull black, hymenium mustard. Short stipitate with a dimidiate or petaloid pileus, entire basidiocarp 2-7 cm broad, to 7 cm high. Superior surface sterile, minutely papillate, often wrinkled. Hymenium inferior, borne on numerous conical spines up to 4 mm long, composed of basidia and dikaryophyses.

Habitat: Gymnosperm, rarely angiosperm wood. Agathis australis, Cupressus macrocarpa, Podocarpus totara

Notes: Pseudohydnum gelatinosum is readily recognisable by the translucent, creamy white fructifications with spines on the inferior surface.

I general don’t both to photograph fungi when species are mixed but in this case I could not resist. Depth of field could have been better.

Hi Clive,
Today my neighbour, splendid close-up shot of this interesting mushroom with excellent details, shapness, DOF and POV. I have not seen before this species. It resembles really an umbrella:). Thanks for sharing this beauty friend.
Cheers,

Bayram

hi Clive,

Very beutiful specie of the Mycena, Mycena's are almost beautiful species.

Good composition and sharpness.
Beautiful natural colors.

Regards from another fungiman

Hi Clive!

I'm not a specialist of fungis, so I look at your picture more as a photographer and would like to tell you that I like it very much. It's delicate, very well composed and you managed the lighting very well. The exposure you have chosen allowed to get a good depth of field.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Clive

Look like your NZ fungi season is well and truely started, nothing much around the Sydney region yet.

Great composition, sharpness and POV. I think the DOF is quite fine. Love warm tones.

Chris

Hello clive,
I loved this shot a lot!
Great angle in capturing a group of them with the best DOF!
very sharp image with wonderful colour and details!
truly a very pleasant composition to view and enjoy
many thanks for sharing
Tony

Nicely composed image taken in perfect lighting conditions. The delicate textures of the fungi have been well rendered as has the colour, and the speicmens are in excellent condition. Given that the lower fungus is very dark and the upper fungi light in comparision you have chosen your exposure well. From a natural history point of view, being able to see some of the gills of the mycena would be great - maybe a slightly lower viewpoint would give this although from the angle of the caps it also may not have. In a pictorial sense, the large creamy white shape in the centre of the left side of the frame is distracting and if this is a leaf could have been removed. Objects that are lighter than the subject always draw the eye. The background is nicely out of focus which make the subjects stand out. Well done.
Cheers
Elizabeth

Hello Clive,

A very nice close up with delicate textures. Nicely composed image taken in perfect lighting conditions. The objects are sprankling. So sharp and ful of fine details. i'm agree with Elisabeth. Try to remove the white shape on the left and you will have the perfect BG. Have a nice weekend. TFS BOB

Hello Clive. Love your ID and also this image that you are sharing here in TN. Well captured in good clarity and also pleasantly muted background here. Best regards. Jusni

Hi Clive,
Now, when it's early spring here in Europe, practically without mushrooms yet, I'm very hungry for fungi photos. :) This one's an amazing macro, You wrote DOF could have been better, but I'm satisfied with it. Nice natural color tones, great composition. Tfs and congrats.
Friendly regards, László
