Driving north from Greymouth we rounded a bend just past Charlestown and greeted by this stunning vista. So I just had to stop and get some shots. There can’t be too many places in the world where you can have lowland coastal rainforest in front of you and peaks that are snow-capped in winter only a short distance away.
This Paparoa Range is a mountain range in the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island. The highest peak is Mount Uriah at 1,501.14m (4,925 ft), and a number of other peaks are higher than 1,200m. The range is located along the west coast between the Buller and Grey Rivers, with the Inangahua River to the east. Some of the range is protected as the Paparoa National Park.
Glacial action in the past has produced sharp ridges, steep cliffs, and cirques, and many of the deeply incised rivers and streams have glaciated forms. With an annual rainfall of 4 to 5 metres, the range is clothed in thick podocarp forest up to about 1,100 m, a thin narrow belt of subalpine scrub giving way to mountain grasses on the tops. On poor soils these grassed areas can be as low as 350m. The range is part of a complex, faulted anti-clinorium from which the softer Tertiary and Mesozoic sediments have been mainly stripped, exposing a core of granite and pre-Cambrian greywacke, argillite, and gneiss. Significant coal deposits have been found in the Paparoa Range and gold has been extracted from the area in the past.

Beautiful capture of the Paparoas in their summer coat. It was well worth making the photo stop.
You'll have to come back one day and photograph thenm in their winter coat.
