NEW ZEALAND’S SILVER FERN
Cyathea dealbata

Today I spent a few hours in the native bush area that covers the top of the cliffs by our local beaches. I am going to buy a macro lens soonish, and Pam (Coasties) has very kindly lent me her Macro lens to try out. So I had fun, with lots of failures but some photos I am happy with.

Something I noticed today is that not every frond has these SPORANGIA some are just plain silver. They are the sterile fronds of the fern. The brown dots you can see here on the white/silver side of the Silver Fern are SPORES, which together are called SPORANGIA. The spores are on the fertile fronds.

ALL ABOUT FERNS IN A NUTSHELL:
Ferns do not produce seeds, but instead bear SPORES on the underside of their FRONDS.

SPOROPHYLL
are fern FRONDS that bear SPORANGIA, e.g. the ‘fertile fronds’ of ferns.

SPORANGIA are clusters of SPORES found on the underside of a SPOROPHYLL.

SPORES are the asexual reproductive cells on ferns.

Fern spores are contained in SPORANGIA, which are borne on the leaf surface in clusters called SORI.

SORI come in all shapes, sizes and locations. They may appear as dots, dashes or lines on the leaf blade. They may occur tucked under the leaf edge as in the maidenhair ferns or in particular arrays on the leaf surface. Here on the Silver fern they appear as small brown dots.

All clear to you? It’s taken a while to sort this lot out, so hopefully it is correct.

Another important point to note is that SPORANGIA is also SPORANGIA in Polish. Thanks Greg for that piece of information. Kia ora to you Greg…

Hello janice!
A masterpiece again.I liked the composition very much. Thanks for sharing.

Another great shot Janice,
The image seems a little shakey to me, could be slow shutter speed and no tripod?
The composition is great, the colours are good and excellent notes as always.
Thanks for posting

Hi Janice!
Great work.Lighting, framing,DOF,framing and composition are excellent.TFS...:-)

Hi Janice

Practise will make perfect... honest. Just keep trying. Vary your settings and while you are still new to using the macro lens note down what settings you are using, condtions and anything else that may have a direct result to the outcome of the image. This is so you can refer to your notes at a later stage when you get back home and review them on your computer. Keep it up. Well done!

Hello Janice,

One of the very view pictures where more sharpness would be a fault.
Very nice colours and good note.
Thank you.

Hey Janice,

The composition of this photo is fantastic. I really like the repetitive pattern of leaves. It's indeed a bit shaky but you explained why. I like the colors and the exposure is great. Well done & TFS!

Pieter

Janice, another beautiful composition.

I like the green shades and the contrast with the bg.

Well done.

Hi Janice. When I want to see beautiful ferns and other wonders, I know where to go. This one is no exception, with a very good composition and a striking way of presenting grey-sharp against green-blurred. Kind of color and focus contrast making this an attractive image. Just a little nit...looks a bit shaky. If you are not sure of the steadiness of your tripod, pushing the button might create some movement blur. A simple way to overcome this is to use the timer.
Regards
JM

very interesting!! I saw t-shirts with this fern on, when I visited Auckland. But I did not know it was NZ:s national flower. Your pic is very beautiful and well composed!

The repetition is amazing! Repetition is found in the leaves, seeds and even in the background when looking at the out of focus leaves. Wonderful, just wonderful! Excellent composition and depth of field. Your picture has a 3-D effect which I find pleasing.
