On the west coast of the South Island are two glaciers that you can literally drive your car to, get out and only have to walk a few hundred metres to see them; and its free. Of course there are guide walks onto the glaciers and helicopter rides that land on them and allow you explore ice caves etc, but unfortunately I didn’t have time for that. You can walk from the car park to within a hundred metres of the glacier face, its an awesome experience. Perhaps you can see the person with a red jacket just to the left of the outflow tunnel.
Fox glacier originates at 2,600m and travels 13 km to its present location at only 300m above sea level. Behind me is dense temperate rainforest which you walk through to view the glacier. Unlike many of the world’s glaciers, Fox is in fact advancing at around 1 metre per year, though it has retreated several kilometres from where it was when first seen by Europeans in the 1872.
Indeed between 1250 and 1850 most of the world’s glaciers were advancing during a cooler period known sometimes as the Little Ice Age. Between 1850 and 1940 they began to retreat during a warm period. Then between 1940 and 1980 they generally began to advance again; after 1980 the current warm period has seen most glaciers retreat again. You can decide for yourselves which part of the cycle is coming next…….

Very very nicely done! You captured this glacier shot very nicely! Theres good light at the same time cloud shadows.... this is one thing I especially like about the Mountains. Plus theres plenty of Vegitation and a glacier in one photo. Good notes, and great panorama! I added this one to my favorites! :-) Thanks for sharing! Cheers Josh Lewis.

Hello chris,
An excellent landscape showing the front end of the Fox Glacier and set in a composition with superb contrasts of light and colour brought about by the clouds and the sky. It is very difficult to guess the size of it but judging by the small human figures seen in the enlargement it must be about 100 m across.
TFS this fine and unusual image together with an excellent note.

Hello Chris,
Most beautiful view on this glacier. Really well taken picture. Coming from a country with a lot of glaciers I'm very interested by them. In my country unfortunately these melt a lot quicker as assumed. And the entrance of the caves, like on your picture, have to been moved back from year to year.
