Golden Barrel
Scientific Name: Echinocactus grusonii Hildmann
Family: Cactaceae

The Golden Barrel is is one of the most popular of all cactis, mainly for its golden spines that keep looking attractive after several years. It is much admired for its large rotund form, noticeably decorated with neat rows of clustered golden spines.

The Golden Barrel has 1.5 to 2 inches (4-5 cm) golden yellow flowers from end of September to end of October in the Southern Hemisphere. The flowers are produced only on mature specimens receiving enough full sun. The flowers are not very visible being small in relation with the size of the barrel, and lost into the creamy colored wool at the top of the globe. They are produced a few at a time over a long period during the growing season in the warm months of the year.

The Golden Barrel is much admired for its large rotund form, dramatically adorned with neat rows of clustered golden spines.

The flowers are also golden yellow in color, emerging from the large patch of wool at the center of the plant.

Large plants attain a size of over 2 feet across, and may remain single or produce plantlets at the side to form a clump. They come from Queretaro State in Mexico, but have become very scarce in the wild due to inundation of much of their natural habitat from construction of a major dam in Mexico, and this plant, along with other cacti, remain attractive targets for wild plant poachers.

This is one of the plants I saw at the Summer and Winter Hothouses at Auckland’s Domain.

Hi Janice,
Beautiful close up.I liked use of perspective a lot.Well seen and composed.
Thanks for posting.

I only have sat on a cactus once...and that was enough. with apologies to Jane in AR, I am not fond of the landscape other than a visit...but perhaps an implant to NZ might cheer it up:-) Very good macro!
I want to share what I have been doing so Click Here:-)

Well framed and presented in this image. Your perspective is my favorite part.

The golden barrel is not native to Arizona but is related to other barrel cacti that are. It is one of the most symmetrically shaped cacti there is to.

The ubiquitous symmetry in the nature.

Nature at Geometry(did i spell that right?)...Yet again, Janice, you make something so common, look so exotic and beautiful that one feels compelled to admire such beauty in Creations' simplest and most common creations...From another perspective, it looks like gold mesh over a big emerald...
A lovely macro...
Thanks for the share!
