NEW ZEALAND’S SILVER FERN
Cyathea dealbata

The Silver Fern is New Zealand’s national symbol. It is widely used in New Zealand to signify New Zealand-ness. The Fern is a symbol of strength, unity and success. It is worn with great pride by the nation's representatives.

This image shows the under-side of the frond of the Silver Fern. On the other side it is all green.

This fern was one of MANY growing on the property where one of my son’s live. He lives on a couple of acres and over ¾ of it are covered in NZ Native Bush.

The silver fern is the only tree fern with silver undersides to its fronds, making a spectacular sight in the moonlight. When these fronds are laid silver side-up on the forest floor, they make ingenious track makers - a helpful pointer for trampers lost in the bush after dark.

Silver fern fronds were also traditionally preferred by Maori for comfortable mattresses.

So if you’re lost in a NZ bush remember to place these silver fern fronds like arrows asking for help, and also pick a few to sleep on for a comfy sleep while waiting for help to arrive.

Hi Janice!

When I look at it, I feel like trying out how it is to use it as a mattress. It's beautiful, and you have presented it with a very artistic and abstract aspect. I like that row of repeated patterns very much and it's a pleasure to read your interesting notes.

As a South African your notes are interesting as the emblem itself is well known by us as well as the reputation. We will see what the springbuck does next week.
I like the way you have put the fern on a black background to make it stand out so well.

Hello my friend!

My favourite photographer and my favourite plant - both from NZ :-) Very arty composition, I like black BG and diagonal composition. Frame looks very familiar :-)

We've got beautifull weather here in Lodz, but no time to enjoy it :-(

Hello Janice,
A fine presentation of the underside of a Silver Fern frond: the thumbnail looks like this is B&W, but I'm glad to see the slight colours of the stem to show that this is the actual colouring. The black BG really sets it off in a fine composition.

How long until the contradictory Xmas in the South? I realize Xmas is same as here date-wise, but I wondered what the date corresponded to down there as in diametrical opposition...and II say that becuase this has a very winter flavor to it art-wise! Fine patterns in organic life format!

What an awesome way to present this fern; so many shots only show the green side. On the black background it is very representative of our national emblem. Good notes too. Nice one.
