Bromeliad: Aechmea gamosepalar
and
Papilio demoleus sthenelus: Lime or Chequered Swallowtail

Bromeliads
are very unique, exotic looking plants in a very fascinating family group. They are amazingly adaptable, tough and relatively easy to grow. They come from extremely diversified growing conditions, creating extremely hardy and resilient plants.

This Bromeliad, Aechmea gamosepala, is commonly known as "Lucky Stripes" and is a very beautiful and hardy plant. Aechmea gamosepala produces distinctive blue and pink matchstick type flowers on long spikes which appear late Autumn. Flowers will last until late winter. The soft leaves hide the strong growing and pupping characteristics.

The very striking individual purplish blue flowers protruding from the numerous large pink bracts and being displayed high above the contrasting foliage, last for many weeks, with several flowering periods per year.

The butterfly, Papilio demoleus sthenelus, is also known as Lemon Butterfly, Citrus Butterfly, Lime Swallowtail and Chequered Swallowtail. It is the most common butterfly throughout Sri Lanka and South India, especially in the plains. It is seen on the wing throughout the year in quick and strong flight. It congregates in hundreds in mud puddles with closed wings to drink water. It visits flowers of all citrus, radish, curry leaf etc.

I visited Butterfly Creek in Mangere, Auckland, yesterday, where I saw these plants and many butterflies.

Truly two beauties. Your title managed to point out the obvious. I never thought of it in this way, either one is fixed on the butterfly, or the flower - on beauty at a time. Thanks for pointing out that there are more beauties in one spot. Crisp and clear. Good color.

Hi Janice

Nice work. Butterfly Creek again... you are lucky. I must get back there. A good place to go in the middle of winter, dry and warm! Keep up the good work. Thanks

Very beautiful and interesting beauties too! I love the contrasting colors of the flower.

Two beauties is correct. Both are gorgeous. The butterfly is a little soft in focus however, I love the colours and it's a very nice composition. Well done Janice.
