Bellbird in Tiritiri Mantangi Reserve
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Bellbird (Anthornis melanura).
This bird can be seen frequently in the north eastern part of Tiritiri Mantangi Island that is covered with fernforest. The small island of Tiritiri Mantangi is located in the bay east of Auckland is a bird-sanctuary with limited access for tourists and inhabits many rare bird species.
This Bellbird is waiting in the forest near a feeding station. I spent quite a while at the feeding station in the rainforest. It eats nectar and is feeded as the planted rainforest on the island does not yet produce sufficient nectare for these birds. I watched the feeding station for quite a long while. After the birds got used to my presence it was easy to get them close to the camera. The bell birds were competing with Hihis (stitchbirds) for the nectar, though the latter were in the minority and almost never managed to get some food. |

Hello Mike,
I expect this is the same Bellbird as we heard but didn't see in Australia! At first we couldn't make out what it was - a sound just like a Swedish church bell!! Lovely to see it here and in a fine pose. Great focus and sharp details too. Nice colours and it stands out well from the background.
Many thanks, Ulla
Hello Mike
Cute portrait of this tiny and colourful Bellbird. Nicely composed the way he's standing on the branch. I like the soft lighting, it brings out the detail of his plumage very well. He has a very interesting looking beak.
