Blackbird
Turdus vulgaris

Other common names:
Black ouzel, woozel, merle, chucket, gottling,.

”The Woozel–cock so black of hue
With orange–tawny bill.”
— William Shakespeare

The Blackbird was introduced to New Zealand from Europe in the 1860’s and 1870’s and now considered the most widespread species within New Zealand, especially in gardens, parks, orchards, farmlands, scrub and forest.

Now reading those notes I can't agree with that. I don't see too many Blackbirds at all. I think Sparrows are more common than the Blackbird in New Zealand.

The adult male is black with bright orange bill.

The adult female is dark brown with pale throat and mottled breast, bill brown and dull orange.

The juveniles are rust brown with a mottled breast, bill dark brown.

The immature males have brown wings against a brown body, patches of black and a dark bill.

They are about 25 cm in length, and weigh 90g.

The song is a loud, clear melodious warble. The alarm call is a persistent sharp “chink – chink”.

And I love this fellow's brilliant yellow eye ring.

Hello Janice,
I forgot that the Blackbird was one of the introduced birds to NZ! At least they haven't reached pest proportions!
You caught this male in fine spring lighting that gives the black plumage a brownish violet tinge in an excellent pose when he turned his head to make a fine eye contact.
TFS this beauty,
Ivan

Hi Janice,
wonderful shot of a blackbird with great details on its plumages and eye. I loved also its pose.

Hi Janice,

We do not have the blackbird here at all so this is interesting. Good capture and exposure on that black colour which can be so hard on a photographer. Well done

Kia Ora Janice,
I've seen quite a lot of them in my garden too! and they alway a winner when feed with breads over the smaller Robins!
you had captured with the bright lighting that makes excellent details over the plummage!
Tony

Hi Janice.
Nice exposure for the feather detail and the black. Using the sun has really given shine to the feathers and highlighted the orange beak with great light in the eye. Great pose for you.

Hello Janice,
Beautiful capture of this Blackbird in a smart pose with the sun light on its lovely plumage making it look like velvet! Great focus on the eye and sharp details too. Interesting background and well composed.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Funny how when I hear the word "blackbird" alone, it reminds me always of the Beatles "White Album"...also a strange combination...black and white and yet the black bird is not truly all white...you have shown its true colours very well for the discerning eye!

Hello Janice

Very good capture of this male Blackbird. I like the composition/cropping very much with the bird looking over his shoulder and int the frame. You did a very good job on the light and the background is well blurred.

I love these birds. They are in some way very social and I have had a couple nesting on my terrace for some years but last year and this year I have seen nothing of them so I think they are dead now. May be an other couple will come - who knows. I also love them because they have such wide range in tones. People talk so much of the Nigthingale but me, I love the blackbirds.

Have a nice weekend

Very sharp capture of this Black Bird, Janice.
I am particularly thrilled at the yello-ringed eye.

Hello Janice! It's such a difficult task to shoot dark birds but you've done it perfectly well, showing all it's details on that very sharp image, well done, thanks!

Mario

Great detail and DOF. Love the over-the-should look you captured here. The eye and eye ring are great on this guy.
Very nicely done.

Hallo Janice
Thank you for the oppertunity to leave my thoughts on this beautiful Blackbird. This is a stunning close up with lots of details to admire. I like the pose you have captured this bird from the back. This way we can clearly see the plumage in full detail. I also like the hint of a shine of the black feathers. You did a very good job on this one as I believe it is not an easy task to get so many details in such dark plumage. I would love to have the opportunity to capture a big and beautiful birds like one of these. Thanks for sharing it was most enjoyable to look at.
Kind regards
Anna
