[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Piha is New Zealand's most well-known surf beach.

Situated on the west coast of the North Island, Piha is 40 kilometres from the city of Auckland. It has black iron-sand that is VERY hot to walk on in summer and on sunny days.

Every summer thousands of people come to the beach for a day or spend the holidays camping or baching. The community is a mix of owners of holiday houses – called baches, who visit periodically throughout the year, and permanent residents who may work from home or commute each day to the City.

Many go fishing on the rocks, and end up drowning. There are lots of warnings about the bad waves and rips and currents, but still more go out there with their fishing lines!! Most drownings are of fishermen, who tempt fate on surf-bashed rocks, and often are caught out while hauling in a fish or freeing a snagged line.

Sand Dunes of New Zealand
"On many parts of the NZ coast, sand is continually being brought on to the shore by the advancing waves. In the neighbourhood of high-water mark the shore soon becomes dry, and the sand is then borne landwards by any wind coming from the sea.

Where the sand accumulates faster than it is being blown away, a hill, or a dune as it is frequently called, is formed. Any obstacle in the path of the blown sand will also arrest its progress and cause it heaping up . . .
Seafriends NZ www.seafriends.org.nz

You can see the different plants that are growing on these sandy areas - even Gazania flowers are being used here to halt the sand blowing any further.

This is the view looking south from the northern end of the beach.

hello janice,
The thumbnail is too small for this fine picture. I like the point of view you have chosen, showing sand, sea and these amazing rocks in the background. Very sad story about the imprudent fishermen.
Thanks a lot
Best regards
Anne

Hi Janice, the pic is so really that seem the hear the sound of wind! Very great seascape,i like a lot the lights and the perfect choice of point of view,my best compliments, have a nice day,Luciano

ah yes the Oceanside...in Mendocino county Cal, there are tourists but rarely at the beach side. They come over from the valley where it is over 100F to cool off at places such as you have imaged so softly..but then it is not even 50F so the change keeps them on the bluffs..and I flak the beaches alone...

Hello Janice,

A beautiful shot from PIHA. Great shot. I was also overthere in 2005 (see my photo's from Piha Beach South and North) But your weatherconditions where not so calm as mines.

Your POV is totaly different than mines, but you show more dunes at the FG. I have seen nearly drowning fishermen. Thansk for sharing.
Best regards and TFS BOB

Hi Janice,

I like this picture a lot. To me landscapes are difficult, so I admire pictures like these. I like the composition a lot, as well as the note. Well done.

Hi Janice,
a very well chosen POV here, creating bags of depth and a lovely variety of texture, detail and tones too. Those Pacific rollers look great, well done! You have some great shots in your gallery :o)

Hi Janice,
I like how you combined the soft texture of the sand in the FG with the jagged texture of the rocks in the distance. Although the view to the surf is wonderful, I do feel that the FG is blokking it. The lines in the FG are more horizontal and are not pointing my eyes further into the composition. A composition with more diagonal or vertical lines and a part with less FG would create a more balanced photo.
TFS,
Niek
