Wasps in New Zealand

Four species of social wasps, accidentally introduced to New Zealand, are now established and classed as pests. Two species are vespulid wasps (common and German), the other two species are paper wasps.

Wasps, bees and ants (the order "Hymenoptera") have two pairs of wings that are linked by a row of hooks, and have a narrow "waist" that joins the abdomen to the thorax. The first segment of the abdomen is fused to the back of the thorax, so the part behind is not the whole abdomen — it is more strictly called the "gaster".

How are wasps different to bees?

The most obvious differences are:

Wasps do not collect pollen, bees do

Wasps do not store food, bees do

Wasps do not make honey, bees do

Wasp nests are made of paper, bees nests are made of wax

Wasp mouth parts are designed to chew food, bees mouth parts are designed to lap liquid

Wasps can sting more than once, bees can only sting once

Bad news - autumn is coming :-(

Hello Janice,
Fine close macro of a Wasp in good light. They're not my best friends but even so they're really quite beautiful in their bright stripes. I like your note too!
TFS and cheers, Ulla

Hey Janice, well wasps just send me cold, i have a bit of a phobia when it comes to them, but this is a lovely and interesting shot. I would never get close enough to get a shot like this lol. Lovely bright, colourful and interesting shot, tfs.

Hi Janice,

Nice detail and colour on the wasp and the out of focus fore and background concentrates the viewer on it. I am allergic to these guys and I also have to admit that SA rugby and cricket are being stung at the moment.

Robin

Very nice macro of this wasp. Good subject focus. As for me, I would have taken this shot from a safe distance using a fully extended zoom lens... ;) Great notes too.

Fartash

and ouch to the last note...I seem to attract them. There is an old wives tale which says when a person is afraid they put out a scent which the wasp knows...this is not true but it doesn't even help to know...just makes me more scared:-) nice and sharp. Glad to know all countries share some poisons!
Bob

Hi Janice,

Wonderful macro shot of this wasp, to be honest I wouldn’t get that close having been on the receiving end of several stings trying to get a shot I admire you courage, superb colours, excellent detail, really well framed and composed.

Kind regards Rick :)

Hello Janice,
Though this may be an introduced European wasp, I don't know what species it is despite the good quality of this macro. The lighting, POV and composition are all great.
TFS this interesting image,
Ivan

Hello Janice,

A very fine macro of this wasp. They're not my best friends but they function so well in mother nature. Eating a lot of insects etc etc. Realy natural colors. Sharp and a lot of fine details.

I read a few weeks a go a story about wasps. They recieve normaly in there nest sucre from the larvae. But when the larvae grow up to a adult wasp and leave the nesthole the older wasp get no more sucre and they begin to search to sweetnes things like your sucrepot or (rotten) fruit. It's a very nice compo. Thanks for sharing these (pest) wasp (-:
Greetings and TFS BOB

Hi Janice,
How are you?
Great macro of this wasp, I like the POV that shows the head so well & that curled-up antennae tip..Good vertical comp also.
Best Regards,
Howard
