This cup fungus is one of several black cup fungi that have not yet been named this one in particular is very common. Found almost exclusively on tea tree often when still standing or held off the ground by other forest derby. When found on top of wood these have a very short stalk as this photo shows but when growing from the side it can have a stalk up to 40 mm long.

hello Clive,
I don't know anything about fungis, but I can see that this is an excellent and original picture. Excellent composition, beautiful colours and good sharpness. Well done.
Anne

great cluster, you can use an artificial bright background in order to make them more prominent. greetings Ori

Hello Clive!

Good to see you again with new photos of fungi! This specie looks really good and a bit alien. Nice, grey colours and interesting shapes. I like composition with green moss. Dark BG is also great looking - flash worked very good.

Hello Clive,

Great photo.
Beautiful colours with excellent sharpness.
Lighting and composition are very good.

Hi Clive.
Amazing, I have not seen this fungi.
Lovely lighting with the fill flash showing their colour and detail, I would imagine the black would be a hard colour to get right.
Lovely composition with them against the green moss.

Hi Clive

The beautiful world of fungi is something I don't really know much about,
but that doesn't keep me from appreciating the extraordinary magnificence found within this realm.

You have done a fine job presenting these mushrooms and I must emphasise
the accomplished result showing amazing contrasts on the black cups.
It's obviously the result of excellent exposure control while making use of the fill-in flash.
The details are nice and sharp and although you do not mention their size
it does seem to be rather small organisms, judging by the surrounding mosses.
The composition is also great and the pitch black BG does well to enhance the subjects.

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Clive,

good photo!
It seems a Urnula craterium (Schweiniz 1822 : Fries 1824) Fries 1851 or another species belonging to this genus.

A great shot of this cup fungi Clive.
Excellent composition and detail.
Its surprising that they haven't yet got around to naming a species which is very common.
Perhaps you should suggest a taxonomic name based on what you know of it ... if you can be bothered with arguing with all the boffins ;)
Another great capture.
Cheers
Steve

Hi Clive,

A superb image, you've nailed the exposure which can be a bit tricky with such a dark subject, excellent!
