This was taken on the Croesus Track just below Croesus Knob at about 1000m above sea level.
Here, the Beech and Kamahi cloud forest has given way to low alpine shrubs, mosses, lichen and liverworts.
This Edelweiss is typical of the ground hugging plants found at this altitude.
I found the following information in the Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand:

New Zealand edelweiss:
New Zealand edelweiss is probably the most characteristic, abundant and widespread of all the alpine rock dwellers. North Island edelweiss (Leucogenes leontopodium) occurs from Mt Hikurangi down to the northern South Island. South Island edelweiss (Leucogenes grandiceps) is found throughout the South Island and on Stewart Island. Their strong resemblance to the famous Swiss edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) is more than skin deep – despite growing on opposite sides of the earth, all these edelweiss species are botanically related.

South Island edelweiss:
South Island edelweiss (Leucogenes grandiceps) is one of four species of native edelweiss, all found in alpine habitats. Their common name derives from the close similarity of their flowers to those of the European edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum). They all have yellow-brown disc florets surrounded by woolly white bracts.

Hope you like the photo.
Thanks for looking.
Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve,

I guess because of "The Sound of Music" I never associated Edelweiss with New Zealand. Thanks to your picture the next time I see it I may recognized it (the memory is going). The flowers are beautiful with good details and lovely colors. They look marvelous against the woody background. I love the composition.

Hello Steve,
Superb capture of this white NZ alpine composite flower, the NZ Eidelweiss. The technical features, POV and composition all contribute to a fine image showing the whole plant in its rocky habitat with excellent clarity.
Nice one and thanks for introducing us northerners to yet another antipodal marvel!
Cheers,
Ivan

Hello Steve,
For me a surprise to see that you have Edelweiss in New Zealand! And I have to say that yours are at leat as pretty as ours. Nice bunch on this rocky soil. Well composed and pleasant picture.
Thanks a lot
Anne

Bonjour Steve,
Salutations
Hervé

amazing capture, TFS Ori

Merci pour le partage.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.
