GIRAFFE, Giraffa camelopardalis

This female Giraffe lives at Auckland Zoo, the closest I can get to see these wonderful animals.

The Giraffe is the biggest ruminant and the tallest mammal. It has a very long neck with short, upstanding mane, high shoulders sloping steeply to hindquarters; long legs nearly equal in length.

Weight: The Male weighs 2420-4250 lb (1100-1932 kg), his shoulder height 9-11 ft (2.7-3.3 m), and the top of horns are up to 18 ft (5.5 m).

The Female weighs 1540-2600 lb (700 1182 kg), her shoulder height is 2 ft shorter.

The head tapers to point and it has a long, prehensile tongue.

Their horns are solid bone, skin covered; the horns of the female are thin and tufted while the males are thick and bald on top, up to 5 in (13.5 cm). They both have a median horn and 4 or more smaller bumps in males.

Tail is hock length, with a long tassel.

Colours: They are coloured brown to rich chestnut (old males darker, even black), divided into intricate tapestry by patches and blotches of lighter hair. Their pattern is unique in each giraffe.

Scent glands: they possibly have glands on their eyelids, nose, lips, and the adult males have pungent smell.

Hi Janice,
What interesting little bumps she has on her head.
This one has the cutest expression, with the squinting eyes and the pursed lips.
I like your close-up, eye-level view of her head.
How did you manage to do that?

Hi Janice!

I must say that Giraffe looks slightly strange in picture like yours. Now we can see all these 'horns' and other things on its head :-) Very nice portrait with high quality. Slightly too much wood in BG :-)

I have to say, I have never seen a giraffe with a white head. I also don't remember seeing one with 3 horns. I will need to look closer when I am at the zoo.

This is a good zoo shot. You can't control the BG which is a little distracting, but the animal is the focus of the picture.

Thaks for sharing the interesting animal of many horns and bumps.
