[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
These Leek Orchids were also growing at around 1000 metres above sea level,on the tops of the Paparoa Ranges just north of Greymouth.
Not many species have yet been described,and there looks to be perhaps 2 varieties here,although the colouration could just be a result of location,humidity or age.
Several species are described in the New Zealand Native Orchid Groups pages,and this one most closely resembles Prasophyllum 'A',previously found on Mt Taranaki,on the west coast of the North Island.

Here is the information about Prasophyllum 'A' that I copied from the NZNOG website.

Prasophyllum "A"
Leek Orchid
PLANT: To 40cm high. Stem erect, tubular.

LEAVES: Single. Rush-like. Wraps around the stem, usually about the same height as the flower stem.

FLOWERS: Raceme of 5 to 20 flowers. Each 5 - 8mm in length. Colour highly variable, usually reddish-brown to yellow-green. Laterals sepals joined together with blunt tips. Labellum similar in length to lateral sepals. Column wings as long or longer than the anther.

FLOWERING TIME:
December - January.

HABITAT: High country tussock, grassland, and sub-alpine herbfields.

CONSERVATION STATUS: Not threatened.

NOTES: So far recorded from only a few locations, but probably widespread throughout the high country. The
status of this species is unclear.

The shots are not quite so clear as I would of liked,especially after cropping,but I hope you like them anyway.

Hi Steve!

The juxtaposition of the two orchids creates a fine impression and allows to search for the differences between them. It's also interesting to notice that their status still is unclear. The fact that the pictures are a little bit soft does not influence on the pleasure to look at them.

Very interesting collageof two variants of orchids, my friend. Differences are clearly visible here. Rather 'soft' subject for tough guy like you :-)

Hello Steve,
A great duo of two species of related orchid endemics. Both show the flowering stems clearly against an OOF natural BG.
I don't mind saying again that your contributions to TN that show the unique flora and fauna of NZ are many of us valuable and interesting.
