Microbial Life in the Champagne Pool at Wai-O-Tapu

Champagne Pool is one of New Zealand’s largest terrestrial hot springs and is rich in arsenic ions and compounds. It is a prominent geothermal feature within the Wai-O-Tapu geothermal area in the Waikato region of the North Island of New Zealand.

The name Champagne Pool is derived from the abundant efflux of carbon dioxide (CO2), similar to a glass of bubbling champagne.

The hot spring was formed 900 years ago by a hydrothermal eruption, which makes it in geological terms a relatively young system. Its crater is around 65 m (210 ft) in diameter with a maximum depth of approximately 62 m (200 ft) and is filled with an estimated volume of 50,000 m3 (1,800,000 cu ft) of geothermal fluid.

These are Silicified Microbial islands with a sulphur base found around the rim of the Champagne Pool. The microbes feed off the sulphur, always racing against time before the silica entombs and fossilises them.

The alkali-chloride water splashes over the miocrobes and coats them in silica. They look very much like stalagmites growing out of the ware and are about 15mm high.

Very interesting post, maybe not so showy, but with TN's spirit. I like colour of water and underwater rocks. Interesting note.

Surely quite an interesting incidence of thermophileus microbial creatures in vibrant colours, not frequently seen in TN, or anywhere else Janice, TFS indeed this rare occurrence my friend.
