~ The Black Swan ~
Ornithology data.
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Anseriformes
Family: Anatidae
Genus: Cygnus
Species: C.atratus
Black Swans are mostly black feathered birds, with white flight feathers. The bill is bright red, with a pale bar and tip; and legs and feet are greyish-black. Cobs (males) are slightly larger than pens (females), with a longer and straighter bill. Cygnets (immature birds) are a greyish-brown with pale-edged feathers.
A mature Black Swan measures between 110 and 142 cm (43-56 in) in length and weighs 3.7-9 kg (8.1-20 lbs). Its wing span is between 1.6 and 2 metres (5.3-6.5 ft). The neck is long (relatively the longest neck among the swans) and curved in an "S".
The Black Swan utters a musical and far reaching bugle-like sound, called either on the water or in flight, as well as a range of softer crooning notes. It can also whistle, especially when disturbed while breeding and nesting.
The species has a large range, with figures between one to ten million km˛ given as the extent of occurrence. The current global population is estimated to be up to 500,000 individuals. No threat of extinction, or significant decline in population has been identified with this numerous and widespread bird.

Hello Martyn,
My neighbour today, lovely shot of the Black swan. The colours are fantastic and the view is looking pretty good. The reflection of the swan can also be seen in water, thats very nice.
Thanks for sharing,
Prasad

Hello Martyn !
This is such a beautiful picture ! I love the majestic pose of the swan, the reflection on the water, and the wondeful vivid colorsof the water. There are also excellent details on the swan. Maybe I wouldhave composed it a bit differently, leaving more space in front of the swan and less space behind him, but well, this is just my opinion, the picture is great as it is. Very well done !
Valérie.

Hi Martyn
So you're here on TN now. Welcome!
I love the golden look of the pond here. Black swans are only found in NZ and Oz so others find them quite interesting. Whereas we just take them for granted.
Very nicely captured

Hello Martyn,
A belated welcome to TN!
This shot of a female black swan has a fine tranquil atmosphere, both the swan and its reflection showing up well in the calm water. Normally the standard composition would be to place the swan on the right as it is facing left, but the colours and the ripples of the water make this placing quite pleasing.
Thanks and look forward to seein more nature shots from you!
Cheers,
Ivan
