[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Nikau palm is the worlds southernmost palm tree, and the most cold tolerant of all palms.
Punakaiki, where I live,is noted for its abundance of Nikaus. In fact,I'm lucky enough to be totally surrounded by them at home.
I found this Nikau flower pod just beginning to open in my garden, and was struck by the purple inflorescenses, which turn a much lighter colour when they open. The flower itself opens wide and splays out so that the individual parts hang like dreadlocks.
The flower is followed by red berries which are a favourite food of native pigeons.

Hi Steve,
Rushed morning, very busy day.
Still have time to see that this shot is well worth a big green smiley.
Have a great weekend.

This is beautiful, Steve, and so very unusual. I am dying to see what it looks like when it is in full bloom. Will you please send us pictures of this flower at different stages?
I am so curious. Thanks for showing us something new. : )

Howdy Steve,

This is an interesting tree, I would definitely like to see the full bloom effect. Once again the flora of NZ proves to be some of the most interesting. The picture composition is very nice as well as the colors. Paul :)

What beautiful colours, lighting and composition you achieved in this one. I just love that purple in the moody atmosphere. Excellent work of a very interesting subject. Thanks for the note too.
