Brush tailed Opossum. The Possum was introduced to New Zealand from Australia to start a fur industry in 1837. In its native land the Opossum is up against dingoes, bush fires and less palatable vegetation, but in New Zealand conditions are so favourable it often breeds twice in one year. It is estimated that the New Zealand Opossum population now tops 70 million and chomps its way through seven million tonnes of vegetation per year.
Why are Opossums a problem?
The damage to native forests can be seen all too clearly in many areas. Opossums ignore old leaves and select the best new growth. In some areas they have eaten whole canopies of rata, totara, titoki, kowhai and kohekohe.
Opossums compete with native birds for habitat and for food such as insects and berries. They also disturb nesting birds, eat their eggs and chicks and may impact on native land snails.
Dairy and deer farmers have the added worry of Opossums spreading bovine tuberculosis.
Opossums are a nuisance in suburban gardens, and sometimes even indoors. By DOC.

Hi Jim, yes, a very big pest in NZ. Was this on Tiri too? Surely not!! We don't often see these animals, unless they've been squashed on the roads, so I am really pleased to see it. Nice and sharp, a good job, thank you

What a little darling! Looks like a cross between a roo and a possum. Our possums in NA look like giant grey rats, not like this cute dewy eyed little fuzzball. I love it! If this image is cropped at all from the original, I would suggest trying a diagonal composition.
