BLACK BACKED GULL

Here you are – a Maori-speaking Gull. I think he’s calling out “Kia ora”, New Zealand’s welcoming Maori phrase.

I found a few (hundred) Seagulls and Black-Backed Gulls yesterday at Devonport, on Auckland’s North Shore. I had my 2-year old grandson with me and he loved seeing and hearing these gulls shouting and screeching at each other.

The Southern Black-Backed Gull Karora (Larus dominicanus) is the largest of the three gull species that live in New Zealand. Black Backed Gulls live in all parts of the country from high country river basins to the urban refuse tip.

In the adult, the head, neck, underparts, rump and tail are white; the back and upper wings are black with a narrow white trailing edge. The bill is yellow with a red spot at the tip of the lower bill. The eye is pale yellow and the legs greenish yellow.

First year birds are brown and in the second year the back is brown and the breast and neck are white flecked with brown. By the third year the back and upper wings are brown and black.

So I think this fellow must be just about an adult. Black-backed Gulls are opportunists taking a wide variety of foods, including offal, refuse, carrion, marine invertebrates, shellfish, fish, eggs frogs, lizards, birds, mammals, small fruit and other plant material.

Hi Janice
It is an excellent capture of this gull, but probably your he is a she - I think the open beak is a clue. Just pulling your leg.
Fantastic timing is very evident. I am convinced it didn't just happen by accident.
You must have an uncanny ability to have the one eye peeping through the view finder while the other one is still keeping a watchful eye over your grandson.
Technically the photo is of high standard. DOF, BG, exposure, lighting, and composition are all great.
Very well done and TFS.

Hello Janice, I love the action. Nice BG and you did a good job on the tough exposure although there are one or small patches that are a little OE. Lovely glint in the eye and the beak open is fantastic.

As for the picture. I don't know how could I missed that. It's probably one of your best. The moment captured here is great and the quality of the picture really good.
