Another shot from last weekends fungi foray. I'm told by my local authority that these are Agrocybe parasitica, commonly known as the Poplar mushroom. There certainly were not any poplars around here. This was deep in the bush on a fallen Kahikatea tree.
Agrocybe parasitica belong to the family Bolbitaceae and grow to about 12cm tall but as large in diameter as a dinner plate (30 cm +).
They are found through summer and autumn on standing dead wood. The spores are dark brown in colour,as are the gills, and the stipe is very tough and firm. These don't look quite like any photos of any A.parasitica I've seen,so if anyone has any other ideas,I'm open to suggestions.
(Hand held,resting on ground,auto focus,as usual).

Like the presentations of Felipe, I admire the variety of fungi that you have available in your zone of photography.
Beautiful presentation with perfect POV to appreciate these specimens totally.
Good sharpness with pleasant frame.
Thanks for posting Steve.

Steve, If you don't mind I'll ditto Ricardo on this one. I'd add that my only nit would be to say that a bit of fill would've livened things up some...

Beautiful composition, the caps look almost velvety. Very nice work. Well done Steve.

I like the photos of mushrooms, the one is here indeed pleasing, very beautiful contrast with the plane rear, very great shot Steve

Beautiful Steve, but I dont forgive you for not cleaning those two disturbing grases over the mushrooms. This one puts me in the right way for ident another I shot last weekend, so thanks. Greetings.

Hi Steve
Nice compo and colours here - the browns and greens work well together. Vertical format suits the subject.

Nice group you found. I like their shape and the color contrast between cap and stipe. The original ground is beautiful, giving a feeling of humid forest aroud these. The light coming from above gives very nice shades in the cap colors. Very good framing with this diagonal and a little step to a different environment behind. Very well done, Steve.

Very nice pic!:)

Hi Steve,

Yep, they look much like what I got in my picture. But the resemblance stops here, Agrocybe genus being quite different from Psathyrella. Or maybe isn't A. parasitica what you got here. As you said in your note the differences you noted are obvious. You should try to check the neibourghs in the taxonomy tree, maybe is anoter Agrocybe in NZ that fits better your observation. If not, Psathyrella genus is a candidate if you got this genus in NZ, because thei certainly look like some Psathyrellas. You should also check on Tricholomataceae family (I know ... this is a pain in the back...)

Cheers, Petru
