Waitomo is a district in the midwest of New Zealands North Island, best known for its world famous Waitomo Glow Worm Caves.
There is limestone along much of New Zealands west coast. The Waitomo limestone is around 30 million years old.Limestone is formed when shells, fish skeletons and other marine organisms are deposited on the sea floor.Later on,natural folding and lifting of the earths crust causes the area to be raised out of the water. The resulting deposits are rich in calcium which is easily dissolved by natural organic acids, even though the limestone rock is very hard.
As rainwater filters through decaying vegetation it absorbs carbon dioxide, making it into carbonic acid. This seeps into cracks in the limestone causing them to enlarge as the calcium (carbonate) dissolves. As the fissure increases in size, larger particles are washed through causing erosion to occur and the widening process to be accelerated. This is how caves start to form.
Caves form along horizontal fissures (passages) or in vertical fissures (shafts, chambers).Occasionally a large area of dissolved fissures will all collapse together to form what is known as a cavern or chamber.
In this photo you can see the fine horizontal lines in the limestone rock that indicate where the fissures are.
I've called this King country karst, because Waitomo is considered to be in the heart of the King country, some of the finest farming country anywhere.I spent Monday down here caving with Gareth (the lizard man) so I have a few more photos from this region to show.I hope you'll find them interesting.
