Wasps in New Zealand

Four species of social wasps, accidentally introduced to New Zealand, are now established and classed as pests. Two species are vespulid wasps (common and German), the other two species are paper wasps. I’m sure that this wasp here is a Paper Wasp.

Wasps, bees and ants (the order "Hymenoptera") have two pairs of wings that are linked by a row of hooks, and have a narrow "waist" that joins the abdomen to the thorax. The first segment of the abdomen is fused to the back of the thorax, so the part behind is not the whole abdomen — it is more strictly called the "gaster".

How are wasps different to bees?

The most obvious differences are:

Wasps do not collect pollen, bees do

Wasps do not store food, bees do

Wasps do not make honey, bees do

Wasp nests are made of paper, bees nests are made of wax

Wasp mouth parts are designed to chew food, bees mouth parts are designed to lap liquid

Wasps can sting more than once, bees can only sting once

I used Noiseware to remove what noise I could, and this was as good as I could manage…

very nice details and composition
of the wasp and the beautiful flower.

Hi Janice,
Nice shot and well composed. Very good detail and color, and you've managed the exposure well..I like the interesting plant it's on..
What is it BTW?
Well done & TFS!

Hello Janice, nicely composed shot of the wasp with good accompanying note. My only nit with this is that the head is obstructed and their is a little noise in image. Anyhow, well done.

Hi Janice
what a fantastic captur of the wasp.
Great macro, good DOF, POV and sharpness along the entire body of the wasp, and I think this is not a macro lens.
well done
Taba

Hello Janice,
Nice composition... Good macro, hopefully you got away without personal damage!
Interesting note with the comparism to bees... I suppose wasps have their place in the system too, even if I don't quite see how...
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Janice
Great macro shot of this wasp and what makes it even more incredible is the fact that you took it with your normal Tamron 28-300 lens. Did you perhaps use any close-up rings at all? Your note is also full of information.
I like the composition and the colours are great. The DOF is good showing nice sharp details. The BG is splendid and the exposure was well managed.
Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Janice,
pretty light, pleasant and peacefully looking scene.
That wasp seems to be quite content visiting blossoms.
The anatomy of the insect is perfectly shown from that strictly sideways point of view.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Hi Janice,
Nice capture. Very close up detail, closer than I'd ever get to these guys. Noise looks fine to me, almost film like.

Nice contrasting colours. I think the noise is rather effective and the delicateness of the flower suits the softness of the image.

You have managed the exposure well and good focal control...well done Janice.

Cheers
Vernon

bonjour janice
j'ai fait un petit WS pour le bruit, cela donne un BG plus net sans toucher a la guepe qui est tres bien comme cela.
