BLOOD LILY,
APRIL FOOL or MARCH LILY,
HAEMANTHUS COCCINEU

The Blood Lily flower heads are like bright shaving brushes popping up from underground bulbs. They emerge from the bulbs that have lain dormant during summer. Then between February and April in NZ, the flowers grow, one to each plant, and bloom and die off before the leaves appear. The flower head comprises 6-9 stiff, red spathe valves surrounding the 25-100 coral to scarlet flowers. The valves are mostly fleshy and may stand erect or sometimes be somewhat lax. The Stem may be spotted or streaked.

The leaves are smooth and fleshy, and semi-erect. They are 2 ugly tongue-like leaves that seem to grow and grow, and then rot away and disappear. They die down from about October in the Southern Hemisphere and once again in February they appear again.

The generic name HAEMANTHUS is derived from the Greek word HAIMA for blood, and ANTHOS for flower, and alludes to the colour of the perianth in certain species. COCCINEUS is the Latin word for red or scarlet.

Hi Janice!
Long time.... I have no time for nothing excepting work at my job and at home. Greg doesn't let me use a computer at home so it's hard to write something for you. I miss old, great time with hours on TN

Amazing photo - I really love this amazing flower with fantastic form and colour.
Thank you Janice!

i llove the stems of this flowers, look like a pattern from a snake, or a lizard.
The use of F32 with this lens, does not bring up as much details, but gives so much depth, and colours are so saturated and beautiful.I always use both settings when the subject is important and then choose at home :)
Really steady hands at 1/8. Congratulations.

Hi Janice
Unusual flower - I'm not familiar with it. Brilliant blooms and strangely patterned stems make for an interesting capture. Regards.
Greg
