Australasian Gannet

Other names: Morus serrator, Takupu, Toroa-haoika, Australian Gannet, Solan Goose, Diver.

Identification: 90 cm (35 in.). Spindle-shaped body, clearly delineated black and white plumage and long narrow wings clearly distinguish the gannet from any other seabirds in our waters.

Similar species: Unlikely to be confused with any other species except for possibly the Masked Booby Sula dactylus but this bird lacks the gannet's golden-yellow head and is somewhat smaller.

Range: In coastal waters throughout the country. Juveniles disperse to waters off south-east Australia, returning permanently to New Zealand when adults.

Status Common.

Where to see In New Zealand: Three easily accessible mainland colonies at Muriwai, Cape Kidnappers and Farewell Spit. Also often seen from boats in coastal waters, particularly in the North Island.

Notes: Flocks above schooling fish indulging in spectacular diving displays

(Added to the theme) Are there any gannets left at Muriwai Pam? This is a good one of him trying to walk up the hill. Very well captured. He seems to be using his tail and a third foot too. Very well captured.

Typical for such a gracefull bird in the air to be so ill at ease on the ground with wings spread for balance and making a real meal of trying to get anywhere.
I think you have done well with the prevailing lighting conditions to get this one so well nice one.

This time downed Gannet :-) Very good action-shot with nice pose and good use of wings and tail. I like composition also.

I like your image very much and it is a good pose to catch. It has a sort of flat feel to it though, so I tried doing a workshop for you that brings out the bird a little

I love your photo ;-) I know that he is landing but it looks like walking uphill don't using his wings ;-)
Very interesting photo, good idea ;-)

Another of your nice gannet.
Well done.
TFS.

Very good composition with the bird well placed in the frame. I think this picture would benefit of a narrower depth of field. Maybe F/5.6 at 65mm wold be enough to get the bird in focus and the rest oof. But I know it's easier said than done.
Anyway that is another of your great post of these beautiful birds.

Pam, I like this pose & it looks like perfect exposure to me. Excellent notes..Maybe a bit more contrast? Plain BG - Great lookin' bird! TFS

This gou should think about fluying up the hill, those feet were made for swimming.

Excellent moment that you caught well.

Very well done and thanks for posting
