Galapagos Tortoise
Geochelone Elephantopus

Here is a photo of two Galapagos Tortoises that I saw at the Auckland Zoo. This is the beginning of the mating ritual that many of us spectators found very interesting. But it was taking so long I didn’t wait around for the final action.

Here you can see Mrs Galapagos Tortoise very patiently accepting Mr Galapagos Tortoise as he gave her a friendly loving nudge. As you can see, he is a much larger tortoise than she is.

The day was hot and sunny and the light was quite harsh on the animals.

The Galapagos Islands are named for the 250,000 giant tortoises that lived on the islands - "galapago" in Spanish means saddle and refers to the tortoise shell. Today, only 15,000 of these giants are left.

There were 15 subspecies, although only 11 still exist today. They have become extinct because of over hunting, and the introduction of goats, pigs, dogs and other animals that trample or eat the tortoise eggs and compete for food.

Sad isn't it?

You can see the second stage as Mr Galapagos Tortoise was giving Mrs Galapagos Tortoise a Gentle Touch

Hi Janice

What a lovely pair of turtles! I'm guessing they were pretty big :))
The POV is excellent, the details nice and sharp and the exposure managed very well even if the lighting condition weren't quite ideal.
Also the pose and the moment you caught them in is exceptional!
Great work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Janice,
The title fits well! That's what my wife is always trying to give me...out the door! just kiddin' ;)
Nice capture with good detail & exposure, even with the difficult light/shadow. Great note, sad that so many have perished.
Well done mf.

Hi Janice

Nice light in this shot. Good clear details. These two were amusing to watch and hear with lots of grunts and groans. TFS.

Hello Janice,
Those guys are awesome!
Good lighting really brings out the details here, and you capture them well...
I like this framing, as it adds some dynamics to some static animals... hehehe
