Brolga

Scientific Name: Grus rubicundus

Conservation Status: Lower Risk

Habitat: The Brolga is found mostly in the tropical north or in the east of Australia. They love to congregate in fresh water and swampy grasslands, but can survive in marginal brackish and salty wetlands.

Unique Features: The Brolga is a tall and slender bird, with very long legs which are mainly grey and a slender neck which is topped with a bare head and a red patch of skin behind the eye running around the back of the head.

Adult plumage: is also grey.

Brolga grow to approximately 1 metre tall with a wingspan of 2 metres. Brolgas often nest and live in brackish water and are thus the only crane species to have a gland in the corner of their eyes which helps to pass excessive salt.

Social Behaviour: Brolgas are normally found in large, noisy flocks (sometimes 1,000 or more). Family groups within the flock are led by the male. When the wet season is over they may have to fly large distances to find food.

Interesting Facts:

• Brolgas may search for cooler air by flying to high altitudes.

• Brolgas are famous for their graceful mating dance. Facing each other with heads shaking and wings spread the two brolgas pirhouette and prance making loud trumpeting calls.

• Aborigines perform a crane dance that may date back thousands of years.

• Cranes are aggressive birds. When fighting, they leap into the air to rake opponents with their sharp claws or stab at an opponent with their bill.

• Although running cranes look awkward, they can easily outrun a person.

Hi Pam,
Nice portrait of this young Brolga.
I wonder if the soft part up in the head is due to fluffy specifics of a young bird or whether it is due to shooting data. If the last one is the case, I can't find its origin in aperture F/10 so it has to be camera shake. It is likely..1/250 at 400 mm hand held is asking for trouble even with image stabilizer.
Enough technical stuff...it is again a nice portrait. Very pleasing to look at with a little dirt on the beak,..
Very well done
Annick

Hi Pam,
Very cute and nice portrait. The photo is sharp, we can watch very well the details of the beak. Because it's a baby, it doesn't have a lot of colors, but because of the dark background, it help's to bring out the head of the bird. Very well done.
Regards, Francois

That's a brilliant close-up of this little Brolga. We were excited to see the adults in the wild in Australia. Your close-up is very sharp with excellent details against the dark background.

What a cutie, Pam.
I have never heard of a Brolga crane before, and this one is a great introduction.
Excellent shot with sharp details and beautiful light.
A wonderful expression on his face.
He must know something we don't know.
