Stage TWO

Galapagos Tortoise
Geochelone Elephantopus

Here is another photo of two Galapagos Tortoises that I saw at the Auckland Zoo. He was commencing the mating ritual that many of us spectators found very interesting. But he was taking a long time.

You can see the first stage here as Mr Galapagos Tortoise was giving Mrs Galapagos Tortoise a Loving Nudge

At stage two, he now has his right foot on the side of her shell. And dear Mrs Galapagos Tortoise is still accepting his advances very patiently.

The Galapagos tortoise comes in three versions, which are distinguished by the shape of their shells, sizes, colours and behaviour:

Saddle-Backed: Mostly found on the lower drier islands. They have raised shells, long necks and limbs.

Dome-Shaped: Found on the upper parts of the islands, where plant growth is dense and thick. They have round shaped shells, very short necks and limbs.

Intermediate: This third race is a mix between the two described above.

Hi Janice, Really nice picture here. Good moment. The left one seems to KNOW you're taking a picture and the right one seems to be more interesting in its mate! I like the composition of this picture. I wonder if the levels are a little bright. But it's nice lighting. :) thanks for sharing.

Hi Janice,
Excellent shot on these two Galapagos Tortoises. My dream photo trip is to make it to the Galapagos Islands. Excellent composition and framing on this shot. I love their intricate detailed and textured shells and skin. Nice one!

Hi Janice,
Better still closer :) So this mating ritual takes some time to accomplish, as turtles aren't known for their speed. Is there a "gentle touch" III in our future, where they kinda mix things up a bit? ;-}}
Well done mf.

Hi Janice!

Funny picture, looks like cars crash :-) Good 'moment' my friend! Very detailed shells and I like face and eye of left tortoise. This is what I call action photography for patient people :-)
