RANGITOTO
Maori name derived from the phrase
‘TE RANGI I TOTONGIA A TAMATEKAPUA –
THE DAY THE BLOOD OF TAMATEKAPUA WAS SHED’.

The youngest of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto is Auckland’s most well known landmark. Rangitoto has commanding superb views of the city and surrounding islands from its summit, its terrain is a testament to the last volcanic eruption some 600 years ago. It is an island covered in rugged lava crops, lush native bush and sandy coves. Rising to a height of 260 metres the circular island presents the nearly the same similar uniform appearance and is visible from most parts of the mainland

Situated about 8 km northeast of Auckland and connected to Motutapu Island by a causeway, Rangitoto is a large island of 2311 hectares with a wonderful volcanic landscape that supports over 200 species of moss, plants and trees including the largest pohutukawa forest in the world.

I spent the day on Rangitoto yesterday, 22 February 2005, climbing to the summit and also taking quite a few photos. So I plan to bore you all silly over the next few days with some of the photos I took. The weather was grey and overcast, and unfortunately the views to the mainland weren’t too clear, but I did have fun. This photo shows a bare lava field, still empty and barren. And right behind it is are Pohutukawas and other native NZ plants growing. Rangitoto is a very strange island so full of opposites.

I've never saw real lava :-) Looks great for me, very...black and little scary [if you think about volcanic eruption and temperature of melted lava]. Very interesting combo - note+picture. I like contrast between black lava and green trees. I hope your volcanoes aren't active Janice!

Hi Janice!Nice landscape with interesting note...You'd written exposure time 10/2000 sec.Is it right?or 1/2000?I think it will be better to rise up F.I think you'd great time there,waiting more shots from Rangitoto...TFS

I know nothing about lava Janice and this is really a strange landscape for me. Your note learn me very interesting informations about your corner of the word which is to the antipode of where I live. The planet become so small. You saw a snowflake and I see lava.

Hello Janice, this looks surreal! Very nice. I really like the black lava and the green trees contrasting eachother. Well done!

What an interesting photo I have never been across to Rangitoto although its been on my must visit list for sometime. Maybe some of your photos will inspire me to make the trip.

Hi Janice, very interesting post. The larva looks great and juxtaposed with the trees makes a strong image of how nature conquers this kind of 'new' terrain. The sky has lost all contrast you can improve shots like this by fitting a graduated filter (dark at the top) that way you can meter off the foreground and the sky won't burn out. Good work.

I'd rather you be there than me Janice. I'd make sure my home is nowhere near this volcano. Nice shot by the way.

Janice, the contrast here is very nice.

Even without a blue sky, the shot is a pleasant one.
