Tarapunga Nuthatch
Sitta Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus

Have you heard of a Tarapunga Nuthatch before?

Well no, you may not have, but I think this seagull is doing a good job as a nuthatch.

I love looking at the photos you wonderful bird people post on TN of the nuthatches as they descend head first down a tree. I thought it was a behaviour unique to the nuthatch, but no, I think this seagull is doing a good copy of one.

Now I’ve seen some beautiful Nuthatch birds on TN, and here’s a list of some of them.

Eurasian Nuthatch, Sitta europaea
Chestnut-vented Nuthatch, Sitta nagaensis
Kashmir Nuthatch, Sitta cashmirensis
Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch, Sitta castanea
White-tailed Nuthatch, Sitta himalayensis
White-browed Nuthatch, Sitta victoriae
Pygmy Nuthatch, Sitta pygmaea
Brown-headed Nuthatch, Sitta pusilla
Corsican Nuthatch, Sitta whiteheadi
Algerian Nuthatch, Sitta ledanti
Krüper's Nuthatch, Sitta krueperi
Chinese Nuthatch, Sitta villosa
Yunnan Nuthatch, Sitta yunnanensis
Red-breasted Nuthatch, Sitta canadensis
White-cheeked Nuthatch, Sitta leucopsis
White-breasted Nuthatch, Sitta carolinensis
Western Rock Nuthatch, Sitta neumayer
Eastern Rock Nuthatch, Sitta tephronota
Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Sitta frontalis
Yellow-billed Nuthatch, Sitta solangiae
Sulphur-billed Nuthatch, Sitta oenochlamys
Blue Nuthatch, Sitta azurea
Giant Nuthatch, Sitta magna
Beautiful Nuthatch, Sitta Formosa
And now:
Tarapunga Nuthatch, Sitta Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus

What do you think???

I am joking!!

Hello Janice , this gull is really standing like a nuthatch , good photo , TFS.

Hi Janice,
He is indeed doing a good impersonation.Good decisive moment in his pose. The colours are natural and the clarity and detail excellent.Have a good weekend!
Regards, David

Lovely bird portrait, Janice. It reminds very much of a Swedish sea gull, but I guess this is smaller. Hope everything is fine in NZ, it must be autumn now? Here is wet, with a little, almost melted, grey snow (we did not get much snow in Southern Sweden this year) and Cassie misses the snow a lot. She loved to behave like a snow plough last winter, when we had a lovely white landscape with blue sky all winter long.

Hello Janice,
This is a humorous caption for a great capture of a Silver Gull doing a nuthatch pose.
This is well timed, sharp and well composed to make an amusing presentation. We need a bit of a laugh now and then!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Janice,
très bonne idée que d'avoir déclenché à ce moment, la position est originale. Jolie mise au point et lumière diffuse.

Janice, was the original file a RAW one?

Excellent image: a great moment with perfect exposure upon the whites. I enjoy sharpness and bg too.

A lovely image with, in my opinion, no nits.

Hi Janice

For a moment there you had my mind racing. I though you perhaps smelled Dave's socks while sleeping. The Tarapunga nuthatch - Sitta Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus yeah??? Ha-ha, I am sure glad you don't work in the thumb-suck department of zoological registrations for newly discovered species. You will blow this poor gull into an identity crisis and then he might start to believe that he is Jonathan Livingston Seagull, and we know what happened to that wise guy. A flatty stuck on the side of a cliff face.

One thing is sure though, although this chap seems to be imitating the nuthatch’s behaviour of a head first descend I am sure he will not manage to do this in a tree. Neither will the real nuthatch manage to perform its typical behaviour on these rocks.

After all the ballyhoo, you've captured a lovely shot of this gull. A great composition and POV with excellent cropping. You made good use of the lighting available resulting in lovely contrasts in the grey and white plumage. It looks a lot like the "bright eyed gull" I've posted some time back, a (Grey-headed gull - Larus cirrocephalus).

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot
