RANGITOTO
Maori name derived from the phrase
‘TE RANGI I TOTONGIA A TAMATEKAPUA –
THE DAY THE BLOOD OF TAMATEKAPUA WAS SHED’.

This is the 9th photo in the series on Rangitoto Island.

Phew, we finally made it to the crater of Rangitoto. It’s been a long haul up here, but so interesting. The approach to Rangitoto's summit is steeper than the rest of the track and the forest becomes particularly thick and lush. Everything opens out when you get to the crater rim and the huge bowl of trees stretches out in front of you. The forest-filled crater’s depth is 200 metres. A loop track around the crater rim gives fine views of the extinct crater and Hauraki Gulf. More on that tomorrow.

The most common tree is Pohutukawa and the shrubs are kanuka and manuka, the pin-leaved mingimingi, and the shining-leaved robust coprosma. Plants that more usually grow in the crowns of forest trees grow here among the rocks; such as the shining broad leaved griselinia or puka, the hairy Kirk’s tree daisy, northern rata vines, and narrow-leaved astelia which can form a luxuriant silver ground cover.

Yeah! You did it Janice :-) I think this view is definitely worth your effort. I think this is the best from series. Breathtaking view, very green and full of plants. And it is crater! Amazing post.

We made it...where's the scroggin?
I don't know if I ever made it to the summit.I can't remember this bit.Its a lot greener than I imagined and there are species I didn't expect to find there.
Greg mentioned some crazy colours the other day, in relation to your baby fern photo...I think he might have been talking about the blue.I think its called cyan- something.Someone told me about it in relation to my earlier bush pics.I sometimes find unnatural blue patches in my bush photos.I don't know how they occur, but I often adjust my blue balance down a bit now with bush photos.I think thats what Greg tried to do the other day.Someone here knows all about it,but I can't remember who...possibly Adrian.

You made it! Well done!! :) Nice picture Janice. Colors are good. Maybe it would have been better if you would have chosen a lower POV and if you would have placed something in the foreground. There isn't much depth in the frame now.

Now you have to think about the way down :-)

I am a little perplexed, is it a palm tree on the right, a third from the top of the picture? What is it doing so high up? I did not think they grew so much in altitude?
